The Department of Agricultural Education & Communication’s online Master of Science option was developed to provide agricultural educators, extension agents, and leaders an opportunity to continue their education while working by attending graduate school online. Modern educational technology can improve access to education, including full degree programs.[146] It enables better integration for non-full-time students, particularly in continuing education,[146] and improved interactions between students and instructors.[147] Learning material can be used for long distance learning and are accessible to a wider audience.[148] Course materials are easy to access.[149] In 2010, 70.3% of American family households had access to the internet.[150] In 2013, according to Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission Canada, 79% of homes have access to the internet.[151] Students can access and engage with numerous online resources at home. Using online resources such as Khan Academy or TED Talks can help students spend more time on specific aspects of what they may be learning in school, but at home. Schools like MIT have made certain course materials free online.[152] Although some aspects of a classroom setting are missed by using these resources, they are helpful tools to add additional support to the educational system. The necessity to pay for transport to the educational facility is removed.

If your online course requires proctored testing, the PSC Testing Centers are ready lend a helping hand. Scheduling an appointment to take an exam at the Pensacola, Warrington, or South Santa Rosa Testing Center is easy. Students can schedule tests and pay associated fees online 24/7 (if applicable) with a computer or mobile device. Students living close to one of these locations will find this service to be a real time saver. Note that testing appointments at the Milton and Century Testing Centers must be made by phone. A common eLearning question is “Where did the course menu go?” also sometimes asked as “I don’t see any content in the course.” A “feature” of Blackboard 9.1 is that it is responsive to your screen size and so will automatically hide the course menu if you don’t have enough room on the screen. Unfortunately this means that you have to unhide it each time you want to get to the left-hand menu.

Electronic devices such as cellphones and computers facilitate rapid access to a stream of sources, each of which may receive cursory attention. Michel Rich, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and executive director of the center on Media and Child Health in Boston, said of the digital generation, “Their brains are rewarded not for staying on task, but for jumping to the next thing. The worry is we’re raising a generation of kids in front of screens whose brains are going to be wired differently.”[169] Students have always faced distractions; computers and cellphones are a particular challenge because the stream of data can interfere with focusing and learning. Although these technologies affect adults too, young people may be more influenced by it as their developing brains can easily become habituated to switching tasks and become unaccustomed to sustaining attention.[169] Too much information, coming too rapidly, can overwhelm thinking.[170]
