A look at the advantages, disadvantages, and underlying purpose of social media in the classroom. When hosting an online course, it makes sense to make the best use of all the resources the Internet has to offer. Social media is among the most prominent of these resources , and there’s a strong temptation for many online educators to find creative ways to use it in their course. There’s nothing wrong with that, so long as it has a purpose.

There are lots of decisions to be made when choosing fonts for your eLearning projects. I have, on occasion, used serif fonts in my eLearning courses (if the client insists, I use the font they want and try to push back if the font makes things unreadable).    eLearning

On Friday, February 16, Blackboard will perform a firmware upgrade. This maintenance will take place between 1am-5am CST (early morning). Blackboard anticipates no interruption in service as a result of this… More work; however, they cannot entirely rule out brief periods of intermittent connectivity. We recommend against taking online exams during this four-hour window. If you have any questions, please contact elearning@utdallas.edu.

Last week we brought Andrew Townsend, our Video Evangelist, and Bill Milstid, our Senior Developer, together to present in a webinar all about eLearning video! This is the first part in a series discussing different ways to deal with video in eLearning.

Gatorlink: Please enter the Gatorlink ID of the Instructor. If you are completing the form on behalf of the Instructor, be sure to put the Instructor’s Gatorlink ID in this field. The system will create the course under this person and will also notify us that you made the request for the Instructor and you will be added as a Facilitator. You will be added to the course manually by us so you will not have access until this is done, but the Instructor will have access immediately once the course is created and they can add you at that time.

Richey defined educational technology as “the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate technological processes and resources”.[4] The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) denoted instructional technology as “the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning”.[5][6][7] As such, educational technology refers to all valid and reliable applied education sciences, such as equipment, as well as processes and procedures that are derived from scientific research, and in a given context may refer to theoretical, algorithmic or heuristic processes: it does not necessarily imply physical technology. Educational technology is the process of integrating technology into education in a positive manner that promotes a more diverse learning environment and a way for students to learn how to use technology as well as their common assignments

Please make every effort to provide your section number(s). While we can create a course shell without a section number, it will have to be associated with a section number at some point if there are going to be students enrolled in the course. If you do not have a section number, use 9999 for the section number until you find it. Then you will have to fill out the request form again to have the section associated with your course.

However, modern electronic educational technology is an important part of society today.[10] Educational technology encompasses e-learning, instructional technology, information and communication technology (ICT) in education, EdTech, learning technology, multimedia learning, technology-enhanced learning (TEL), computer-based instruction (CBI), computer managed instruction, computer-based training (CBT), computer-assisted instruction or computer-aided instruction (CAI),[11] internet-based training (IBT), flexible learning, web-based training (WBT), online education, digital educational collaboration, distributed learning, computer-mediated communication, cyber-learning, and multi-modal instruction, virtual education, personal learning environments, networked learning, virtual learning environments (VLE) (which are also called learning platforms), m-learning, ubiquitous learning and digital education.

Virtual education in K-12 schooling often refers to virtual schools, and in higher education to virtual universities. Virtual schools are “cybercharter schools”[108] with innovative administrative models and course delivery technology.[108]

Help, CBTs pose some learning challenges. Typically, the creation of effective CBTs requires enormous resources. The software for developing CBTs (such as Flash or Adobe Director) is often more complex than a subject matter expert or teacher is able to use. The lack of human interaction can limit both the type of content that can be presented and the type of assessment that can be performed, and may need supplementation with online discussion or other interactive elements.

Virtual classroom learning and microlearning have become commonplace in corporate training. Both options adapt beautifully to the modern classroom , which strives for adaptability, flexibility, and accessibility. At face-value, though, the connection between this EdTech option and this design model seems ambiguous at best. As training professionals, we do our best to keep up with current trends in the field. If you are using groups in your course, and a student gets dropped from the course by the Registrar, they are also dropped from their group. However, when the student is re-enrolled in the course, they are not automatically reinstated into their course group(s). The instructor must re-add the student to his/her group again.

Massively open online courses (MOOCs), although quite popular in discussions of technology and education in developed countries (more so in US), are not a major concern in most developing or low-income countries. One of the stated goals of MOOCs is to provide less fortunate populations (i.e., in developing countries) an opportunity to experience courses with US-style content and structure. However, research shows only 3% of the registrants are from low-income countries and although many courses have thousands of registered students only 5-10% of them complete the course.[167] MOOCs also implies that certain curriculum and teaching methods are superior and this could eventually wash over (or possibly washing out) local educational institutions, cultural norms and educational traditions.[168]
